Our roots
Originally farmers from the Selby area, we have a long history in the wholesale potato and vegetable trade.
Established in Bridlington since the 1930s
Richardson and Sons potato and fruit merchants was established in Bridlington shortly before the Second World War, with the aim of supplying the local shops and restaurants with high quality produce at wholesale prices.
Utilising valuable contacts built up in the farming community, we soon developed a reputation for supplying only the best fruit and vegetables, coupled with a level of customer service that is second to none.
Active in war efforts
During the war years the business was given the responsibility of sourcing what little exotic fruit was available and rationing it out to the local area. We also played a small part in the war effort, lending our small fleet of trucks to the RAF who in turn used them to help construct the local aerodrome.
Lansdowne Road
In the post-war years the business continued to grow and soon we needed a bigger warehouse to keep up with customer demand. We moved to our current premises in 1950, choosing a location in the exact centre of town.
With more space we were able to purchase potatoes by the lorry load, always ensuring we had many varieties in stock at a given time. Before long we were supplying the busiest fish and chip shops on the Yorkshire coast, and to this day we remain the area’s leading potato specialist.
SuperFruits opens its doors
Other developments include the addition of a retail outlet in 1985. Super Fruits is situated at the front of our premises and stocks a full range of fruit, vegetables and potatoes for the general public. We now also stock a wide range of bird and animal feeds.
East Coast Chips is born
Keeping up to date with the needs of our customers has always been crucial to our success. In the late 1990’s we saw a significant increase in the demand for prepared vegetables, especially freshly made chips.
We took the opportunity to invest in our own processing machinery enabling us to supply the local fish and chip shops, cafes and restaurants on a daily basis.
PRESENT DAY
To this day we continue to be the area’s leading wholesale fruit and potato merchants supplying a wide range of customers along the Yorkshire coast. While many things have changed over our long history in the business, our commitment to exceptional customer care has remained our primary focus.
